Welcome to the BioHouston website. We appreciate your interest in the
Houston region biotechnology industry and hope our site will prove an
invaluable resource for you.
At BioHouston, we work with the leaders of some of the greatest
research institutions in the world and interact with scientists,
venture capitalists, public officials, pharmaceutical industry leaders,
and the leaders of emerging biotechnology companies. I am confident
that we are planting seeds and building relationships that will change
Houston and the world in the coming decades.
We know that in the greater Houston region we are already interacting
with the next success stories, the companies and individuals who will
write the next chapters of our region’s life sciences history. I find
myself wondering “What will be the next Cyberonics or Lexicon?" and
“Who will be the next Nancy Chang or Arthur Sands?”
There are scores of scientists working now toward discoveries that
could have commercial applications, if we can encourage them to
continue their work in Houston and connect them with the funding and
technical expertise that are required to turn great ideas into
marketable products.
As our biotechnology industry grows, it will drive growth in many other
economic sectors: law, finance, design, construction, consulting, and
housing, among others. Over the past 100 years the Houston economy has
reinvented itself to answer the needs of one emerging industry after
another – cotton, oil, energy, and medicine. These transitions have not
been easy, but each new industry has generated tremendous economic
development in Houston. The biotech revolution will do the same.
In
2009, we will build on our 2008 successes, expanding our programs to
more effectively convene and connect the players in the biotechnology
industry, and serve as a catalyst for growth. We are deeply grateful to
all of our members, associates, supporters, and volunteers for helping
us fulfill our vision of building the Houston region’s life science
industry into a global competitor.
