Celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month with BioHouston!
October's Breakfast Forum will feature Dr. Jenny Chang, Dan L Duncan Professor of Medicine, and Medical Director of the SmithBreastCenter at Baylor College of Medicine.
Dr. Chang obtained her medical degree at CambridgeUniversity in England, following which she completed fellowship training in medical oncology at the Royal Marsden Hospital/Institute for Cancer Research in the United Kingdom. She was also awarded a research doctorate from the University of London. There, she developed an interest in breast cancer, particularly in the area of prognostic and predictive markers. She used the clinical situation of locally advanced breast cancer, in which patients are traditionally treated with pre-operative therapy, to assess the use of such markers in predicting treatment response. Her recent work has focused on the intrinsic therapy resistance of cancer stem cells, resulting in several publications and international presentations. In addition, she holds several federal grants evaluating novel biologic agents and patents on new technologic advances, especially in the area of high throughput molecular profiling.
Dr. Chang is also working on a project with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The project is focused on the use of cDNA array technology, which allows the expression of thousands of genes to be studied simultaneously, to comprehensively seek patterns of gene expression in breast tumors that are associated with sensitivity or resistance to specific chemotherapies. The goal of her research is to identify novel pathways responsible for therapeutic resistance and cancer stem cell self-renewal in human breast cancer biopsies, and to rapidly translate these findings into clinical trials with inhibitors of cancer stem cell self-renewal.
